8 helpful ways to find healthy snacks on the beach

How do you prepare a healthy and fast snack on the beach?

Fruit, yogurt, home made drinks, ice cream or popsicles?  Here are some ideas for a healthy snack on the beach with your kids.

Alternatives to sweets and junk food for children and their parents

The sun is shining, the sand is burning under your feet, the water is warm; wouldn’t it be just right to have an ice cream or an ice cold slushy?

Be careful with the ice cream however, a week with ice cream everyday isn’t the best thing, not even for an adult.

What alternatives can we suggest? Directly from the MiMa Club Hotel restaurant; a few idea of healthy snacks, even while you’re on the beach.

1. Drink a lot of water!

Children have endless energy when they’re on the beach, and they seem to be charged by the sun as they go. It is important to drink a lot of water and to stay hydrated. Always bring several water bottles with you, keep them out of the sun, most preferably in the cooling bag.

2. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables

Strawberries, peaches, apricots, prunes, cherries, grapes: during the summer you get to pick freely! All fruits are full of vitamins, water and minerals; a precious good when you are sweating a lot.

In order to avoid that sand gets all over your fruit, or that you have to look for a place to wash your fruit, we advice you to get organized the night before your visit to the beach. Prepare, wash and cut your fruit into bite sized pieces and pack everything up in tupperware. Remember to bring forks and spoons.

If your children are not fond of fruit, make a tasty fruit salad and add some brown sugar or chocolate chips; your kids will love it!

Your kids don’t like vegetables? Cut cucumber or carrots into sticks; they’re going to seem a lot sweeter to eat!

3. Have you ever had a yogurt on the beach?

An excellent alternative for a healthy snack on the beach! Yogurt needs a  little bit of attention as it needs to be kept in the fridge until you eat it. Add some cereal or fresh fruit.

4. If you prefer “home made” drinks

If you can, you should stay away from soft drinks and iced tea, which are rich on sugar and additives. Choose freshly squeezed fruit juices, or unsweetened tea. If you make them the day before and store them in the fridge they’ll be great the day after.

How do you keep them fresh and cool? Bring some ice with you and put in your glass. Don’t exaggerate however, too much ice in the warm weather can play ugly tricks on you!

5. Bring a cooler, plates and cutlery

6. Dried Fruit: easy to bring to the beach

If you don’t have the possibility to bring fresh fruit, or if you don’t have a way of keeping it cool, dried fruits and nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts) are a good option, rich in protein and perfect to eat on the beach.

7. Crackers and break sticks: a valuable “filler”

Great as a morning snack and always better than foods that are high on fat which are hard to digest, such as pizza and potato chips.

8. Ice Cream, popsicles and slushies… in moderate numbers

You should never have to say no to an ice cream. Now you have a bunch of ideas to decide what to snack on while you’re on the beach,  and it’ll make it easier guaranteed to make healthier choices.

Another important thing to remember is that ice cream, popsicles and slushies should be had in the shade, and eaten at a calm pace in order to avoid a “brain freeze.”
